What Makes a Highlight Reel Actually Watchable
Most DIY highlight reels commit the same fouls: every clip runs too long, the music never syncs to the action, and there is no build. A great sports edit is rhythm. Plays are trimmed to their essential seconds, cuts land on the beat, and the sequence escalates so the best moment arrives when the energy peaks, not three minutes before the end.
Tribute films add a second layer: the story around the sport. The five-year-old in the oversized jersey, the team photos through the years, the parents in the same bleacher seats for a decade. When a senior night film cuts from a kindergarten soccer clip to a varsity goal, that is when the crowd makes the sound you are hiring me for.
For recruiting edits, the rules invert: coaches want identification, full plays, and zero music-video effects. I build those to recruiting standards, jersey ID up front, best plays first, because a highlight reel that annoys a college coach is worse than none.

Questions about sports films
What footage do you need for a highlight reel?
Whatever exists: game film, Hudl or similar platform exports, phone videos from the stands, and broadcast or livestream recordings. Mixed quality is normal and fixable. Tell me which games contain the key plays and timestamp anything you can. I will handle the rest.
Can you make a senior night video?
Yes, this is one of my most requested films. Senior night edits blend childhood sports photos with game highlights and are formatted for the school's presentation system and time slot. Book 3 to 4 weeks ahead of the ceremony when possible, since these cluster around the same season dates.
Do you make recruiting videos college coaches will actually watch?
Yes, built to recruiting conventions: athlete identification up front, best plays first, full uncut plays, minimal effects, and no music gimmicks. It is a different product from a tribute film, and I will tell you plainly which one your situation calls for, or whether you need both.
Can you combine photos and game footage in one film?
Yes, and for tribute films you absolutely should. The arc from first-season photos to varsity footage is what turns a highlight reel into a story. Banquet and senior night audiences respond to that arc more than to any single play.
Whole team or individual athlete: can you do both?
Both. Team season films work for banquets and end-of-year celebrations, and individual tributes work for senior nights and gifts. Team projects can use a shared Google Drive or Dropbox folder, or another team-preferred method, so every family can contribute footage and photos.
How long should a sports highlight video be?
Three to five minutes for pure highlights, five to eight for career tributes. Recruiting edits should stay near three to four minutes with the best material in the first 30 seconds, because that is how long a college coach gives you.
