Questions about birthday films
Which birthdays are worth a professional montage?
Any birthday where the room will be full of people who love the guest of honor. In practice, that means milestone decades from 30 up, sweet sixteens, first birthdays, and any year following a season worth celebrating: a recovery, a retirement, a comeback. If you are asking the question, the answer is probably yes.
How do we keep it a surprise?
Easily. We choose a shared Google Drive or Dropbox folder, or another transfer method that stays away from the guest of honor's phone and inbox. Most surprise montages are organized by a spouse or adult child in a couple of weeks without the honoree suspecting a thing.
Can we include video messages from people who cannot attend?
Yes, and for milestone birthdays I insist you try. I will send you a one-paragraph instruction you can forward to anyone, they record a short message on their phone, and I edit the clips into the film so they feel intentional rather than pasted in.
How far ahead should we start?
Three to six weeks is comfortable, especially if you are collecting video messages from busy people. Faster is often possible. Tell me the party date and I will tell you honestly what fits.
What about a first birthday film?
First birthday films document the wildest year of change a human ever goes through, from hospital bracelet to first steps. Parents send the phone camera roll, I find the story inside it. Fair warning: grandparents will request their own copy.
Funny or sentimental: which way should the montage lean?
Both, in the right order. The best birthday films open with humor, settle into the story of a life, and land on sincerity. I will calibrate the tone to the guest of honor. Some 70-year-olds want a roast, and I am happy to oblige.
